ACTIONS THAT LEAVE THEIR MARK

Lucía López Polín undertook the moulding and reproduction of the tool marks on the walls of two Neolithic flint extraction shafts.

One set of marks involved two series of circular marks (U-shaped in cross section) some 16 mm in diameter and with a maximum depth of 12 mm. The second set involved five parallel furrows with a V-shaped cross section and a maximum length of 20.9 cm. The areas occupied by these sets of marks were 106 x 160 mm and 320 x 550 mm respectively.

Moulds of these marks were made to obtain replicas for later microscopic study (these moulds were produced at the highest resolution possible), and to be used as teaching tools or for display in museums.

In shaft 2330 a combination of two types of silicon was used to make the mould: Provil novo light (from Heraeus Kulzer; commonly used when the aim is to make microscopic observations) and Silastic 3481 (from Dow Corning; habitually used with other aims in mind).

The assessment of the results is still incomplete.
